Vegan - Non-Vegan Ingredients
Reduced Iron: Also known as Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) or Sponge Iron. It is used to fortify foods such as flour. It is produced from iron ore or mill scale (the surface of hot rolled steel) by reduction with hydrogen or carbon monoxide. It is vegan.
Rennet: Extract usually obtained from the stomach of a newborn calf. Rennet contains Rennin enzymes and small amounts of pepsin. The older the calf, the more pepsin in the yeast. Rennet can also be obtained from synthetic sources or from bacteria and fungi. It should be checked whether it is of plant origin.
Rennin: Enzyme found in rennet. It is used in cheese making to break down the casein molecule and coagulate milk into curd and whey. It should be checked whether it is of plant origin.
Reticulin: One of the structural elements of skeletal muscle (along with elastin and collagen). It is not vegan.
Riboflavin: Vitamin B2. It should be checked whether it is of plant origin.
Riboflavin-5-Phosphate: A more soluble form of riboflavin. It should be checked whether it is of plant origin.
Royal Jelly: The food that bee larvae are fed and that enables them to become queen bees. It is not Vegan.
Talk: Hard animal fat, especially those derived from the kidney parts of ruminant animals, is not Vegan.
Tartaric Acid: In many fruits, especially An organic acid found in grapes. It is usually obtained as a by-product of winemaking. It is vegan.
TBHQ (Tertiary Butylhydroquinone): a synthetic food preservative used in oils, margarines, crackers, fast foods and many other food products. It is produced from phenol and butane. It is vegan.
Tertiary Butylhydroquinone: TBHQ. It is vegan.
Thiamine Mononitrate: Synthetic form of vitamin B1. It is synthesized by removing a chloride ion from thiamine hydrochloride and mixing it with nitric acid. It is vegan.
Thiamine Hydrocolide: Synthetic form of vitamin B1. It is produced from coal tar, ammonia, acetone and hydrochloric acid. It is vegan.
Toluene: A colorless liquid hydrocarbon obtained from the processing of petroleum. It is vegan.
Tricalcium Phosphate: (Calcium phosphate, tribasic) Tribasic form of calcium phosphate. Also known as calcium orthophosphate. It consists of a mixture of calcium phosphate. It should be checked whether it is of plant origin.
Tocopherols: Vitamin E. It is vegan.
Trypsin: Enzyme usually obtained from pig pancreas. It is not vegan.
Turmeric: A perennial herb from East India. It is vegan.
Urea: Also known as carbamide. Waste product of digested protein that is filtered by the kidneys and excreted from the body in the urine. It is almost always produced commercially from synthetic ammonia and carbon dioxide. It is rarely produced from animal urine. It should be checked whether it is of herbal origin.
