Is Urea Vegan? | Its Use in Cosmetics
Is Carbamide Vegan?
What Is Carbamide (Urea) and Where Is It Used?
Carbamide is a compound widely used in skin care and the pharmaceutical industry. Thanks to its natural moisturizing factor (NMF) properties, it softens the skin and prevents water loss. Applications:
✔ Skin care products: Moisturizers, face creams, lotions
✔ Medical creams: Treatment products for eczema and psoriasis
✔ Shampoos and hair care products
✔ Toothpastes
Urea has keratolytic properties (dissolving dead skin cells) that support skin cell renewal. For this reason, products containing urea are recommended for dry and sensitive skin.
Is Carbamide (Urea) Vegan?
Yes, carbamide (urea) used today is generally vegan-friendly. Since carbamide is a chemically synthesized compound, it may not be derived from animal sources. However, there are some exceptions depending on the production method. In the past, urea was derived from animal urine or other animal sources. However, the urea used in modern industry is generally produced through a chemical reaction between ammonia and carbon dioxide. Since this process takes place entirely in a laboratory setting, it contains no animal-derived ingredients and is considered vegan.
However, some brands may use animal-derived urea. Therefore, choosing vegan-certified products is the safest option.
From Which Sources Is Urea Derived?
Urea is obtained through two main methods:✔ Natural Sources: It occurs naturally in the urine and sweat of mammals.
✔ Synthetic Production: Today, urea is produced synthetically through the reaction of ammonia (NH₃) and carbon dioxide (CO₂) under high pressure and temperature. This method is widely used in the agricultural, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical industries.
